{ Tokyo, Asakusa } Pelican 淺草77年老麵包店

A 77-year-old Bakery in Asakusa

Asakusa is one of the must-visit tourist spots. No one can come to Tokyo without taking a glance of the famous Kaminarimon (Kaminari Gate). For centuries, Asakusa has been the center of Tokyo's shitamachi, where traditional arts and unique local culture still survive.

Located in the Asakusa neighborhood, Pelican is celebrating their 76th birthday this year. This time-honored bakery is known for only two products, white bread loaf and roll. In 2017, they opened a cafe in which people can try delicious toast and sandwiches made of their bread. I ordered Ham Katsu Sando, two slices of bread filled with 1.5 cm ham cutlet, some shredded cabbage, and thin layers of mayonnaise, mustard and tonkatsu sauce. The sandwich was perfectly cut into four squares, not only for good presentation, but also for ladies to bite gracefully. The grilling net left the beautiful, crispy, brown crust on the surface of each side of bread, but the center of the toasts was still pliable and soft.
