{ Tokyo, Hiroo } Yamada-ya 山田屋煎餅

Snack without guilt — Senbei

Senbei is a type of Japanese rice cracker. It comes in various shapes and flavors according to its production. You might find yourself keep dipping your hand back in the bag of mix senbei. Fortunately, senbei addict is not too guilty. Unlike popcorn or chips, this traditional snack is low in fat and cholesterol. Next time when you are choosing snack for movie night, senbei could be a healthier option.

There is this decrepit senbei store quietly sitting on the way to Hiroo station. Nowadays, Yamada-ya is still selling their handmade senbei in big glass jars and bins as they have been doing for decades. In order to preserve the crunchiness, they put piles of desiccants at the bottom of bins. One round flat nori senbei costs only ¥30, which is a good deal for a delightful on-the-go snack. Buy as much or as little as you want, so you can experiment with different flavors without getting stuck with only one type, and worrying about moisture.

“ The owner does not talk much, but I can tell that he like sumo from his collection in the back and the calendar hung on the wall. I feel like Yamada-ya is a reflection from this silent man, old and tranquil.”
